Wigan Council Eection results May 2008

Despite the carnage elsewhere in the country, Labour has kept control of Wigan with 42 seats won, an overall majority in the council chamber of 9.
Labour 42 seats (-4)
Conservative 14 seats (+4)
Liberal Democrat 4 seats (no change)
Other parties 15 seats (no change)

North Wigan wards are becoming Conservative strongholds as a north/south political split seems to develop in the Borough. In Standish, Conservative newcomer Judith Atherton took the seat from Labour's George Davies with a suprisingly large majority, and in Shevington Conservative Paul Liptrot aslo took the seat with a large majority over Labour's Mike Crosby.
In Orrell Conservative Richard Clayton swept aside the personal problems that have dogged his campaign with a resounding majority over Labour's Mike Barnes.
Conservative leader Mike Winstanley now heads a group of 14 Borough councillors in blue colours.
The Community Action Party's Stanley Barnes took the Winstanley seat well ahead of Labour's Phil Kelly.
Labour stalwart David Molyneux came safely home in Ince, and former Mayor John Hilton held his seat in Aspull and New Springs with a close win over Liberal Democrat Alan Robinson.
It was a poor night for the Community Action Party, which had two sitting councillors beaten including leader Peter Franzen.

Labour is expected to suffer its worst performance nationally for 40 years in the local elections in both England and Wales.

The party has fallen into third place nationally with 24% of votes, with the Conservatives on 44% and Liberal Democrats on 25%.

Labour has lost more than 160 seats, with Conservatives gaining 147.

Conservative leader David Cameron called it a "big moment" for his party. Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman said the results were "very disappointing indeed".
